Overwrought writing, like a bodice ripper on steroids. The sex/love scenes were Harlequin Romance extravaganzas gone over the top of purple prose and juvenile True Romance. There is no way I can recommend this to anyone.Product details

Someone Else Daughter Book I A Miranda Rights Mystery 1 edition by Linsey Lanier Romance eBooks Reviews
There were a couple of problems here. First, I really didn't care for the romance in the book. That may have been my problem. If you like romance novels you might appreciate this book more than I did. The other problem is this book needs some serious editing. A lot of repetitive material. You want to scream - "I already know that. You don't need to tell me again." I gave it 3 stars but that may be a gift. The book is probably closer to a 2.
I see-sawed a bit at the beginning of this book but then...wham...I got pulled into it and didn't stop until the end. The plot of this book is a bit different and the heroine is a LOT different from your normal mystery. Miranda was abused by her cop ex-husband. After she was brutally raped, he demanded that she get an abortion. When she refused, he waited until the baby was three weeks old and then, somehow, used his law enforcement background to put the baby up for adoption without her knowledge. When she learned what he had done, she attacked him for the first time. After he threw her out of the house, she tried to find her child going through legal channels. Seeing no hope, she travels the country, still searching and all the while "toughening" herself by doing physical labor and learning martial arts. A slim clue leads to Atlanta and a fluke lands her an entry level job in a Private Investigation Agency and she finds herself involved in a case investigating the murders of young teen girls. I loved this book and I really loved Miranda. She was tough, independent, brash, and tender. Her boss, Wade Parker, was the perfect foil to help smooth her rough edges. I'm so intrigued that I have already bought the next in the series. (But, I do hope that the editing errors aren't as numerous as in this one.)
Sexual situations may offend some readers
When Miranda Steele’s abusive husband stole her infant daughter, and put her up for adoption, the bottom dropped out of her life for a while. Then, she came back determined to never again be a victim, and to never need a man. She took odd jobs, learned self-defense, and developed physically, moving around the country in search of her missing child for thirteen years, until she came across a letter from a 13-year-old girl in a suburb of Atlanta who claimed to be adopted and ignored by her adoptive parents. Thinking this was the best lead she’d ever had in finding her Amy, Miranda heads for Buckhead, Georgia.
There, she meets Wade Parker, wealthy son of a real estate mogul, who broke family tradition by becoming a private investigator. When a 13-year-old girl is murdered, and Amanda is found near the body, she’s arrested under suspicion of committing the crime. Then Wade comes to her rescue, is impressed by her, and hires her as a trainee in his PI firm.
Sparks of all kinds fly between these two as they struggle to find out who is murdering 13-year-old girls in one of Atlanta’s richest suburbs, and Amanda feels that she’s close to finding her long-lost daughter.
Someone Else’s Daughter by Linsey Lanier is a spell-binding thriller with two loveable characters and a richly limned environment. The plotting is first-rate, keeping the reader on tenterhooks until the explosive climax.
You really need to read this one.
Well written, fast paced story, though wondering if time frames are a little skewed ro make the story work ? Female lead characteristics a little unbelievable...AND....another author who thinks if you don't add a litle graphic sex, no-one is going to read the story.
This was a good story, with believable characters and an engrossing plot. Miranda's reluctance to enter into a relationship was far more believable than the usual "jump into bed at the least provocation" that seems to be the norm with many romantic mysteries these days. I also appreciated her toughness, and the fact that it wasn't superficial. Many of the so-called "tough cookies" of modern mystery writing are just tough on the surface, and are unbelievably squeamish at the most inopportune moments. Miranda, however, is credible as someone who has toughened herself up as a result of her earlier life; this toughness also makes the story line tantalizing, because you know that she has feelings for Parker, but that she is fighting them because of her fear of losing herself again in a relationship. The characters are nicely balanced, and the twist of involving one of the girls in the murders was believable, too.
My only objection is to the somewhat spotty editing. Not knowing the difference between a plural "s" ending and a possessive "s" ending is an annoying and all-too-prevalent error these days. Some misuse of words was also irritating; please, take time to look up the big words that you don't know, and don't just trust the thesaurus when it says that one word is a synonym for another word! Also make sure you're using the correct word -- at least twice in the book the author used a word that sounds similar to the one that would have been correct, but which meant a completely different concept. A minute's worth of research on the internet (dictionary.com is your friend) would give you enough information to know that the word you chose is wrong, so put in that extra effort! And if you paid someone to edit this book? It's time to hire a new editor.
I feel like the author was attempting to giver the novel a "modern feel," but the main character was just too much too bawdy, too crass, too one-dimensional and not at all likeable. I didn't enjoy the book because I couldn't stand Miranda.
This book was more about physical attraction and sex between the obligatory opposites than it was about mystery and detective work. I was disappointed.
Overwrought writing, like a bodice ripper on steroids. The sex/love scenes were Harlequin Romance extravaganzas gone over the top of purple prose and juvenile True Romance. There is no way I can recommend this to anyone.
